Elsevier Executive Publisher, Mr. Chris Pringle

On Tuesday, November 4th, 10:00-11:30 AM, Mr. Chris Pringle, the Executive Publisher of Elsevier's transportation research journals, gave a presentation to faculty and students of Transportation Engineering Program in CEE Main Conference Room (1179 Martin Hall). The presentation title is Scientific Journals: How They Operate, How to Get Published, and How to Get Involved.

This seminar will be useful both to junior and to senior researchers. The first part is geared primarily towards more junior authors. It will offer advice for authors on how to prepare and submit their work for publication. Topics to be addressed briefly include: preparing a manuscript; structuring an article; and stylistic advice concerning use of language, etc. The second part will appeal to researchers interested in building their careers through journal activities beyond simply writing papers. Involvement with academic journals can benefit researchers in many significant ways. Chris will give insight into how to get involved in journals in capacities other than as an author. Roles to be discussed include: reviewing papers; editorial board membership; guest editing special issues; and senior editorial roles such as associate editor and editor-in-chief. There will be time for discussion of all the topics covered, and of any other publishing-related matters participants wish to raise.

Mr. Chris Pringle is the Executive Publisher responsible for the transportation research journals published by Elsevier, and is based in Elsevier’s Oxford office. He has managed these for over 20 of his 27 years at Elsevier. In that time this list has grown to 20 titles, publishing over 1,800 articles a year, and representing over 70% of the indexed articles and citations in the Transportation category of SSCI. Chris has a B.A.(Hons) in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from the University of Oxford. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He is a longstanding member of TRB Committee ABG40 on Library & Information Science for Transportation, and has served as an elected Council member for the Association for European Transport.
