The State Highway Administration Office of Traffic and Safety/Traffic Operations Division (Hanover) is recruiting for a Sign Technician III position. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications* listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. All eligible candidates must meet the minimum and selective qualifications by the closing date. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy, and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification in Office of Traffic and Safety/Traffic Operations Division (Hanover).

This is the journey level of work in the design, layout and fabrication of signs used in
highway signing operations. Employees in this class produce all type signs by all methods of fabrication and are responsible for the layout, design and fabrication of non-standard type signs and silk screens. Employees will operate all sign fabrication equipment including silk screen machines, solar beam light developer and computer aided sign manufacturing software. Employees in this class exercise independent judgment in determining the most efficient and economical method of completing work orders. Employees layout and design signs in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD), and other State and Federal signing standards and regulations. Employees do not supervise, but may provide training and guidance to less experienced Sign Technicians.

QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

EDUCATION: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in sign fabrication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: The ideal candidate should possess knowledge of sign fabrication techniques and methods, equipment and materials used in the silk screen process, and computer aided sign fabrication technology and equipment. Ability to read and interpret highway sign work orders. Experience with the use of machinery and hand tools. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements, work effectively in a team environment, attention to details and the ability to work independently.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
Employees assigned such duties must possess a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland. Employees in this classification must satisfy the administration's training and certification program requirements.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland with less than four (4) points. Employees are required to maintain a reliable communication link (telephone or pager) for the purpose of emergency call back requirements, and may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day as required for sign emergencies.

All candidates serve an initial probationary period of 6 months, which may be extended to 12 months.

The incumbent in this position may be a member of a covered bargaining unit and may be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
